Safeguarding Africa’s Economies from Climate Change

  • Nairobi Nairobi Serena Hotel Nairobi City, Nairobi County Kenya (map)

There is no denying that climate change is having a profound effect and impact on the global south – particularly Africa, where climate change threatens the lives and livelihoods of over 100 million people in extreme poverty.

At present, Africa's economies are extremely vulnerable to climate change, with the World Bank estimating that the continent could face a 2.3% decline in GDP by 2050 due to climate-related impacts. The UN Economic Commission for Africa warns that climate change could result in an annual loss of $50 billion for the African agricultural sector alone.

As climate-related events such as droughts, floods, and extreme temperatures become more frequent and severe across the continent, this panel will convene private and public sector experts for a discussion about how best to build climate resilience and adaptation strategies across the continent, as well as investment opportunities that lie there within.
