Clara Bonnor, Senior Consultant, Control Risks

Clara is a senior consultant in Control Risks’ Africa business intelligence and ESG teams. She is based in Control Risks’ London office and leads on ESG due diligence and business intelligence investigations across the continent. She previously was based in Nairobi for three years and led Control Risks’ business intelligence practice in East Africa. Clara speaks English, Portuguese, and Spanish, and has extensive experience working across key sectors in Africa, including telecoms, logistics and extractives. Recent cases Clara has worked on include the following:

Three independent assessments of mining companies’ adherence to ESG principles within their operations in Angola, the Republic of Congo, and Tanzania.

  • An investigation into the largest telecommunications company in the Central African Republic, including an assessment of its operations, vulnerability to political interference, and any links to sectarian violence occurring in the country.

  • Multiple investigations into a data centre in the Horn of Africa, including an assessment of its shareholders, its international partners and local perceptions of its reputation.

  • Numerous due diligence investigations into the ports sector across Africa, including in Sierra Leone, Somalia, Kenya, Angola, Equatorial Guinea and South Africa. Each of these investigations included an assessment of the port's vulnerability to political interference, analysis of is operations and probes into any allegations of corruption in its activities.

Prior to joining Control Risks, Clara completed a MA degree in Geopolitics, Territory and Security at King’s College London. In 2020, she completed a certificate in corporate sustainability from New York University. Originally from Canada, she has lived and worked in Colombia, Brazil, South Africa and Kenya.
