Ruth Henry Zaipuna is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of NMB Bank Plc, Tanzania’s largest bank and the country’s most valuable listed entity. A highly respected banking executive with more than 20 years of experience across banking, finance, audit, governance and corporate leadership, she is recognised for driving sustainable growth, institutional resilience, innovation and financial inclusion.
As leader of the NMB Bank delegation to the inaugural Tanzania Investment Forum in London, where the Bank is a Strategic Organising Partner, Ms. Zaipuna brings deep insights into Tanzania’s evolving investment landscape, capital markets and financial sector opportunities. She has played a pivotal role in strengthening the Bank’s position as a key catalyst for economic development and private sector growth in Tanzania.
Ms. Zaipuna joined NMB in 2018 as Chief Financial Officer, served as Acting Managing Director from October 2019, and was appointed substantive Chief Executive Officer in August 2020. She became the first Tanzanian to lead the Bank following its privatisation in 2005. Under her stewardship, NMB has delivered six consecutive record-breaking years of performance, strengthening its balance sheet, accelerating digital transformation, expanding financial inclusion, and maintaining its market leadership in capitalization and customer relevance.
Her leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic was marked by decisive action to safeguard employees, customers and the Bank’s financial strength while ensuring uninterrupted access to essential banking services. In 2020, NMB reported a profit after tax of TZS 210 billion, at the time the highest annual profit ever recorded in Tanzania’s banking sector.
Among her notable achievements, Ms. Zaipuna led NMB’s landmark US$100 million equivalent local currency bond issuance listed on the London Stock Exchange, a pioneering transaction for a financial institution in East Africa. The transaction reinforced NMB’s reputation as an innovative institution capable of mobilising international capital to support long-term economic growth and development.
