H.E. Dr. Jean Mathanga

Minister of Energy & Mining | Republic of Malawi

Honourable Dr. Jean Mathanga is a Malawian politician who currently serves as Minister of Energy and Mining. She was appointed to the position by President Peter Mutharika on 30th October 2025.

She has an extensive background in electoral management and political organization. Prior to her ministerial role, she served as a commissioner of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) and later as the National Director of Elections for the Ruling Party (DPP), where she played a key role in shaping the party’s electoral strategies.

As Minister of Energy and Mining, she is actively involved in efforts to transform the mining sector; strengthening the legal framework to curb illegal mining, improve adherence to environmental and safety regulations. Her efforts include engagements at high-level international conferences and strategic collaborations with development partners to address existing gaps in Mining Operations.

Dr. Mathanga’s leadership reflects a blend of public policy implementation, political strategy, and sectoral development focus, positioning her as a key figure in Malawi’s governance landscape.

Honourable Mathanga has sat on a number of Parastatal Boards including Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) and the Electricity Supply Commission of Malawi (ESCOM) as Chairperson of the Board.

Honourable Mathanga is a founder and a member of several Business Organizations and she is Managing Director of her group of Companies.

Honourable Mathanga holds a Degree of Bachelors of Business Administration (BBA). Master in Leadership and Management.
